MEMBERSHIP LEVELS

How many times a week, and how many times a day, do you tune into WWUH Radio?  If you compare the amount of enjoyment you derive from the time you spend listening to the programming on WWUH Radio with the cost of other forms of entertainment — such as going to a movie, or to the theater, or to a concert, or out to dinner — you will find it to be a bargain.

A Contribution of $30, or just over X cents a day, will get you a 2013 WWUH ceramic mug.    While the Sustaining Membership level begins at $100, and amounts to only 27 cents a day.  And the Patron Membership level begins at $250, and amounts to just 68 cents a day.  I hope you will agree that these sums are quite modest in comparison to the amount of pleasure you receive in return for your pledge of support.

WWUH Pledge Drive

TALKING POINTS

Here are lots of ideas to get you started on a pitch. Just pick out one that resonates with you, put it in your own words, and then elaborate on it. Each of these is just a jumping-off point – add your own thoughts and enthusiasm to it!

Most of these are generic, and can be used during any program. There are also sections for NEWS and MUSIC (last two pages).

GENERIC

In a climate of media consolidation, where depth and diversity are increasingly hard to find, we need what public radio provides. Your support makes it possible.

What does media consolidation mean for us as media consumers? Less variety, fewer choices, access to a very limited range of perspectives. But Public Alternative Radio, WWUH, gives you the depth and diversity you won’t find anywhere else.

WWUH is an oasis of diversity amid the sameness of the commercial media landscape. We provide essential nourishment for your mind and soul, with our amazing variety of programs.

Public radio exists only so long as the people who choose to listen also choose to help pay for it. That’s how WWUH remains independent.

As long as our funding comes from you, the community, WWUH is free to reflect the richness and diversity of our community.

Think about the programs you listen to on WWUH. Then consider whether you would be willing to do without them. If your answer is no, then the only remaining question is, how much will you contribute this year?

More than 95% of our programming is produced right here in Connecticurt, reflecting the rich diversity and creativity of the WWUH community.

WWUH has something for everyone, including you, and we need everyone’s support to sustain this wonderful resource.

Take just a moment to consider what your favorite WWUH programs contribute to your life, and then make your contribution accordingly.

Listener contributions are the most important source of funding for WWUH. Your dollars provide 50% of our annual operating revenue, and that’s what keeps WWUH on the air.

Your support makes your favorite programs possible.

You’re listening now, so please pledge now, to keep this program, and all of the other programs that matter to you, on the air.

If you listen to commercial radio now and then, you know what media consolidation means: Cookie-cutter programming. And 15-20 minutes of every hour, they’re hounding you to buy stuff. WWUH is different – completely different. And you know why? Because it’s independent, community-based public radio, funded by the community, and our only responsibility is to you, the listener.

Periodically throughout the day, you hear announcements thanking local businesses for their support. You might think of them as commercials, but they’re not, really. These are local people, part of the community, just like you. They’re doing their part to help pay for the programs that are so important to all of us. Today, it’s your turn to do your part.

If you’re sitting at your computer right now, you don’t actually have to stop what you’re doing to pick up the phone and call in your pledge. You can do it online. Right now. Just go to WWUH dot org, and click on the “Pledge Now” link. It’s all there, even the pledge gifts. The site is secure, so you can use your credit card to pay. Or we’ll be happy to send you a statement.

Now that you’re ready to call and make your pledge, let me ask you to take just a moment to consider increasing your usual pledge. Our costs increase every year. And we’re growing, so that we can serve you even better. If every contributor would add even 5 or 10 dollars to their pledge, think what a different that would make. We’re grateful for every dollar you contribute, but if you can, please, give just a little more.

If you’re one of those people who’s pretty much tethered to a computer, I’ve got a great way for you to participate in this pledge drive. Pledge online! Just go to WWUH dot org, and use that computer to do something really great for your community. Pledge a few bucks to help pay for the amazingly wonderful programs that you hear only on WWUH. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s secure. And it’s absolutely essential if you want to keep this great community station on the air.

You can really be a hero during this pledge drive. All you have to do is pledge just a little more than you usually do. Even 5 or 10 bucks more can make all the difference in helping us to meet rising costs.

We don’t spend a whole lot of time talking about pledge amounts. It’s entirely up to you, and we’re just so very grateful for every single dollar you give. But I am going to ask you to give according to your means. If you can give a little, give a little. But if you can give a lot, then please do. The sky’s the limit! And you know that it’s money well spent – a gift to the community, and an investment in real honest-to-goodness independent radio, a commodity that’s become pretty rare these days.

There’s a pretty good chance that you’ve gotten a letter from us lately – either your membership renewal notice, or a request for an extra gift. If you haven’t returned it with your gift yet, I bet it’s still pretty close to the top of the pile. Why don’t you go get it right now. Sit down, fill it out, write your check, mail it today. One way or another, we need your support to keep WWUH strong. Do it by mail as long as you’ve got the forms right there, and you’ll still be part of this great pledge week.

I’m really glad that you’re listening to WWUH. This is such a great station, and obviously you get something out of the program you’re listening to right now. But…  If you’re not a contributing member yet, you’re really taking a gamble. This station, and this program, stays on the air only as long as the people who choose to listen, also choose to help pay for it.

WWUH is community based radio. Our locally produced programs keep you in touch with what’s going on in your community.

The nationally produced programs we air are your window on the world. Whether it’s news, public affairs, features, or music, you get an intimate and in-depth picture of other places and other cultures.

WWUH is a shared resource, where you’ll hear many different opinions and perspectives. You may not agree with them all, but it’s important that everyone has the opportunity to be heard, at least some of the time.

Understanding those who differ from us, and those with whom we disagree, can only be a good thing. And the diversity of programs you hear on WWUH gives you an opportunity to consider other perspectives, so that your own opinions will be more fully informed.

Lots of very different people listen to WWUH. But we all share a common bond – an appreciation for the very special programming that only WWUH provides. And that bond links us together in the WWUH community.

It’s remarkable, really… the [program name or element] you’re hearing today was paid for by people who made contributions during the last pledge drive.   That was nice of them, wasn’t it?  Now, it’s your chance to do something nice for yourself, and for people like you, by making a generous pledge in support of [program name or element] on WWUH.

The [music, news, whatever] you hear on WWUH continues to push the boundaries of radio, and strives to satisfy your curiosity. You know how much it means to tune in to [this show]. So let us know, by making your pledge to keep creative radio alive in central and northern Connecticut.

Have you ever been inspired by something you heard on WWUH? A vivid picture painted in words, a startlingly beautiful piece of music. It’s a gratifying experience, and you’re listening to WWUH because you know that what you hear may inspire you, move you, amaze you. Could you afford to do without what only WWUH brings you? Then what can you afford to help pay for it?

WWUH is diverse, eclectic, challenging, educational, inspiring. It’s also portable. You can usually find a way to listen to the radio, anytime, anyplace. Damn, we’re good! But we’re not free. Just like any other service you value, you’ve got to help pay for it. Unlike other services, you get to name your price. Pick an amount that fits your budget, then give us a call.

You don’t have to give money to WWUH, but I hope you’ll choose to. As you consider whether or not to pledge your financial support, consider how your understanding of the history we’re living would be different if you didn’t have WWUH. You’re support makes it possible for WWUH to keep you informed.  Think about what you get from WWUH, and then decide what you’re able to give back.

Supporting WWUH is a great thing to do. You’ll feel good about it, and you’ll be doing something good for yourself and your community.

WWUH brings you programs that matter.

It’s not just background sound or light entertainment.

WWUH probably isn’t for everyone. It takes a special kind of person to appreciate the depth and diversity of our programs. The fact that you’re listening now means you’re one of those special people.

The amount you pledge isn’t nearly as important as your commitment to take an active role in keeping WWUH on the air.

Give a lot if you can, but give only what you’re able

Give according to your means, give till it feels good!

WWUH airs many different programs for many different people. Please help to pay for the programs you listen to by calling in your pledge right now.

[Relate this to the specific content of the program you’re pitching.]

This [music, news, perspective, diversity] simply should be on the radio, somewhere. We need your help to do that.

I feel very fortunate to be working at WWUH. I’m doing meaningful work, helping to provide programs that matter for people who care. You’ve got a role to play as well, and it’s every bit as important as mine. You’re job is to help fund WWUH, with your financial contribution. Do something meaningful for yourself and your community by pledging now.

One of the great things about WWUH is that you get to hear so many different perspectives. You hear people from all walks of life, different cultures and countries, various ages. And that’s a good thing. The more we understand each other, the more likely it is that we can find a way to live and work together. Support diversity and understanding by supporting public radio. Call now with your pledge.

Some people really don’t like pledge drives. If that describes you, please, just listen with an open mind. This is how we raise the money that keeps WWUH on the air. Really, it’s such a small price to pay for what you get back – this program, and all the other programs that matter to you.

Once you call and make your pledge, you’ll hear our programming differently. You’ll be invested in this great service, you’ll be part of a community working together to support independent local media, providing real alternatives to thousands of people throughout central and northern Connecticut.

I want this radio program to stay on the air. I believe in the mission of WWUH. I believe it’s different than anything else that’s out there. And I want WWUH to keep bringing you stuff that cannot be heard anyplace else. I want this radio station to thrive. That’s what I want. If that’s what you want too, please call and make your pledge to support WWUH, because that’s the only way to keep this station on the air.

We’re there as soon as you wake up. We follow you to breakfast, maybe even into the shower. We’re there when you start your car up. Maybe you listen while you work. WWUH is part of your life, and life would be very different without us.

It takes a special kind of person to appreciate public radio, especially a community-based station like WWUH. You’re listening right now, and that makes you someone very special. Why are you listening, and what is it worth to you?

What happens when you listen to WWUH? You get informed, entertained, inspired, even captivated. Your mind is engaged. This is programming that matters, for people who care.

Is WWUH a habit with you? It’s easy to take it for granted, to forget just how important it is in your life. Today’s the day to stop and think about it. Why are you listening, and what is it worth to you?

You’re listening to WWUH 89.9. But WWUH isn’t just another spot on the dial – it’s a window. It’s your window to what’s going on in your community,

WWUH provides music, news and information programs that you can’t get anywhere else. It’s an important service, it’s a service made possible by listener support. We’re here for you; please be here for us now.

Is WWUH a habit with you? That’s good, but you need to be careful not to take it for granted.

We can’t make you pledge. It’s strictly voluntary, it’s entirely up to you. But please, volunteer.

If you’re not a WWUH member, we’re delighted to at least have you as a WWUH listener. Now take the next step, help pay for the programs you care about, and see how rewarding it is to be an active participant in the WWUH community.

If you’ve never been a WWUH member before, we sure would love to have you join us. Don’t be shy! It’s really very easy and it only takes a minute.

NEWS/PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Understanding national and world events and the people who shape them helps to make you a more involved, effective and compassionate citizen of the world.

[name of news program] is more than the news of the day.  You hear about breakthroughs in science and technology. And you hear stories about culture and art, writers and musicians. You have a wide range of interests -- and so do we. That’s why we’re here, and that’s why you’re listening. WWUH gives you more. More depth, more variety, more perspectives. And the more you give to support WWUH, the more we can give you in great programming.

There's an old saying…. “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.” Keeping up on the news has never been more important. The economy changes, sometimes daily. International relations can change within a few hours. And WWUH is the news source you turn to when you need to know. Ignorance can be costly, but the price tag on bringing you the news is high too…making your pledge of support more important than ever. Please support the news source you rely on by calling now with your pledge.

One of the things you expect from WWUH is quick coverage of breaking news. But we don’t just break the news – we put it back together, too. You’ll hear first-hand reports, analysis, opinion – in-depth coverage that helps you to become more fully informed.

MUSIC

For people who truly love music, nothing compares to WWUH. There’s a vast world of music, an endless variety of culture and creativity, that you’ll hear only on WWUH.

The fact that you’re listening to [name of music show] says a lot about you. By choosing WWUH, you’ve demonstrated a deeper appreciation of musical possibilities. This music survives only if the people who might love it have a way to find it. That way is WWUH. And WWUH survives only if the people who use it help to pay for it. So that’s what I’m asking you to do today.

You’re listening to [name of music show] right now because you love [name of music genre]. But you’re not just a [music genre] fan, you’re also a community radio fan. Because community radio is the only radio where you can hear anything out of the mainstream. That’s us – WWUH. And that’s you, too – the WWUH community – investing in this incredible music service.

What’s the most important instrument? Piano, guitar, drums? Today, it’s the telephone, and we’re waiting for you to make it ring. The vast world of music that you get only on WWUH is only possible if you help to pay for it.

You’re listening to [name of show] on WWUH, where music lives – no boundaries of space or time, no limits. You come here to open your heart, to experience all the possibilities of music. I’m so grateful for what we’ve got here – and only here. Please think hard about what it’s worth to you, and then call us with your pledge.

People who embrace music that’s out of the mainstream are people who think for themselves. I’m describing you, in case you didn’t notice. And I’m sure you understand the concept of listener support for WWUH – the people who want and need the service, helping to pay for it. Now think about how much WWUH means to you, and if you’re not already a supporting listener, become one now!
